What is the American Dream? To be comfortable? To have enough money to do whatever you want, vacations, buy nice clothes, have two cars, one preferably being an SUV. A couple kids, a job that is fun and makes you "happy" or at least does a good job paying the bills. Oh and dont forget about a 401k, retirement and great insurance. Man we ask for a lot! This all sounds great to me! I know its what my family has been striving for. But I have recently been challenged to think about what does God want for my life. Is God's plan for his disciples to just live comfortable in the "American Dream?" The more I read his word, the more I realize that this is not how God has called us to live and it is not the end all to our life here on earth.
That is pretty easy to figure out when you think about another problem us Americans have (and I am completely talking about myself here too). We are never satisfied! We always want a little bit more. Most American families have so much, but we still feel like our house could always be a little bit bigger or nicer, we need that one cute outfit or just a little more money and then we could go on more vacations or do this or that. It's just never enough. If you are reading this, then you have a computer and you are considered to be filthy rich compared to most people in this world! But we are not satisfied with what God has given us.
So how can our lives be the American Dream when we are never satisfied. That's because it is NOT what God has intended for us.
What if there was a different path we could stive for that was satisfiying? What if it brought us true joy and excitement back in our lives? What if it made you feel like you couldn't wait to get out of bed every morning and shout for joy! Would you want that? Of course!
I will never forget when I went to Ecuador with my church when I was 18, and I saw people that had true joy. They loved and worshiped God with EVERYTHING they had. These people were starved to hear and learn more about God and the joy and excitement that flooded from them was amazing. I was jealous of the happiness that they had. And they lived in shacks, walked around barefoot and were basically dirty. Material wise they had nothing, barely had enough food to get through the week. But we never heard them complain about anything. So why are Americans so unhappy? I mean we have everything we need right?
I believe it is because we are not living the way our creator intended us too. God has more in store for you than you could ever imagine. God has called us to live by faith! He doesn't give us a 5 year plan of what our life is going to look like. He wants us to trust Him and give Him complete control. We have to learn to listen and obey God each day instead of just doing what is comfortable. That is hard to do in a society that teaches us to do what is comfortable.
As I have been constantly asking God what his will is for my life and feeling like I am not getting any answers. Or my 5 year plan, like I would like. God has spoken to be through this paragraph in a book called crazy love.
I think a lot of us need to forget about God's will for my life. God cares more about our response to His Spirit's leading today, in this moment, than about what we intend to do next year. It is easy to use the phrase"God's will for my life" as an excuse for inaction or even disobedience. It's much less demanding to think about God's will for your future than it is to ask Him what He wants you to do in the next ten minutes. It's safer to commit to following Him someday instead of this day.
This morning I woke up and prayed to God, instead of asking him God what is your plan for us this year, where are we going to live, what house etc. I asked God, what can I do for you today, Tuesday. How can I serve you and glorify your name today. Or better yet, this morning. What can I do for you this morning?
oh how I wish I could describe to you the joy I feel when I am walking so close to God! He is so mighty!
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Mathew 6:34
Step out in faith and live for Him TODAY!
